So you want to join the Ukulalas….

Here’s what you need to know.

Who are the Ukulalas? The Ukulalas are an Interest Group of the What’s Next organization.  All of the members of our group are members of What’s Next (how to join), participate in other activities of What’s Next and  live in the neighborhoods around Patterson Park.

I’ve never played before, is that a problem? Not an issue.  We were all there, not long ago.  Each “strum” includes some beginner songs and we have occasional strums, just for beginners.

Are there auditions? Absolutely not.  All members of What’s Next are welcome to join us, as long as they agree to keep it fun.  We do as much laughing as we do singing and strumming.

How much will I need to practice? That’s up to you, but every week, our strum leader sends out a list of the tunes we’ll be playing at our Tuesday and Saturday strums.  The list always includes a few two chord songs, something new and some old favorites.  We encourage (but don’t require!) everyone to run through those tunes before practice.  For each tune we play, you can find the chords and words on the website Tune List along with a "play along" video from youtube.  You can print out the songs for the week, or access them on an iPad. Our strum schedule and tune list are updated every week.

Should I buy a ukulele? You can, of course, but consider borrowing one from a member until you see if it’s for you.  We can arrange for a “loaner” and help you decide what kind to buy when you are ready.

How do I get started? Check out the “beginner tips” page. There are many, many videos on youtube that can help, we’ve listed a few that members have found useful.

Do the Ukulalas perform at events? Although we occasionally perform at community events in and around Patterson Park, including a weekly “stroller strum” at the Observatory in warm weather, we are mainly in it for the fun of playing, singing and being together at our bi-weekly strums and “beginner strums”.  Past events we’ve done include: Winter Lights in Patterson Park, Birthday Celebration at the Canton Library, Winter Solstice Walks in Butchers Hill, Fells Prospect & Upper Fells Point, Upper Fells Point Community Garden Celebration, Patterson Park Flea Market, and Halloween Trick or Treating on Pratt Street.

Is there a cost to join the Ukulalas?  Joining What's Next is $10 a year.  We do ask that the Ukulalas contribute to the cost of renting an indoor practice (currently the Max Gallery on Madeira St.) place when it's too hot, or too cold to play outside.
