We will be reading Graham Greene's classic, The Quiet American (1955).
The novel is set in Saigon amidst the collapse of French colonialism and the early participation of the United States in the war. Greene indicts American intervention, intervention grounded in a willful innocence and ignorance and a belief in the inherent goodness of its actions. He does so by telling the story of Alden Pyle, a young American, through the eyes of the older and more jaded British journalist Thomas Fowler. The third leading character is a young Vietnamese woman, Phuong. Greene drew upon his experience as a war correspondent to tell his story.
All are welcome.
