Discover the History of the Canton Company, 1828 through 1980s
All around the neighborhood of Canton are signs of the industrial revolution that helped fuel the growth of Baltimore. The Canton Company, incorporated in 1828, played a major role in Baltimore becoming a major seaport and manufacturing city. The Canton area became one of the most successful and earliest industrial parks developed in American history. The company controlled substantial acreage extending all the way to the Back River, provided employment for thousands of workers, and attracted millions of investment dollars. The company’s greatest successes would be the development of maritime industries along its shoreline that provided access to the shipping channels of the Chesapeake Bay, linking Canton to ports around the world.
Local amateur historian Raymond D. Bahr, MD, will present his research into the Harris Creek watershed and the Canton Company. He will also talk about how Peter Cooper, President Lincoln, and Fredrick Douglass fit into the history of Canton. You will hear firsthand about the new history panels that will mark Fredrick Douglass’s ties to Canton.
