If you want to RSVP or request additional information about a specific item, please use the RSVP option for that item provided in the description in this newsletter or on the Events Page of our website.

If you haven't paid dues for this year, please do so. Go to the donation page to pay for 2026. Dues are only $10 per person!

The Communications Committee has updated the contact list to include all those members that have opted in to have their information available. The updated version is available now! UkuLaLas!

Tuesdays, 9:45-11:30am
Cedar House in Patterson Park

At 9:45am strum along with the UkuLaLas. Meet on Tuesday mornings at the Cedar House for practice. Uke players, other instruments, singers and supportive audience members are all welcome. And starting at 11am Stroller Strum on the steps of the Observatory.

The UkuLaLas warmly invite all parents and care givers to a sunny diversion in the park. Bring your little ones to a fun sing along that will be sure to get their toes tapping. Rattles, kazoos and other noise makers are encouraged. Pass the word about this free event in our lovely park.

UkuLaLas Summer Saturday Workshop at Viv Thompson’s Home

Saturday, August 1, 10am-noon

We’ll meet at Viv’s house from10am to noon for a special workshop. Come learn and review some ukulele skills. We can also play some fun tunes together! Come at 9:30 for coffee or tea.

First Monday Trail Hike - Ellicott City Trolley Trail

Monday, August 3, 10am - noon
300 Oella Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228

Join us for a hike along the Trolley Trail in Ellicott City on August 3rd at 10am.  We will start at the Benjamin Banneker Museum site which tells the story of the freed slave often considered the first African American man of science. After the hike feel free to explore the museum. Meet at Charmed Kitchen at 9:15am if you want to carpool. Please let us know if you will meet us in Catonsville at 10am or whether you can drive from Charmed Kitchen.Thanks in advance for your RSVP.

Fiber Arts Group

The Fiber Arts Group will hold their monthly gathering at Nancy Newman’s house on the second Sunday, as is customary. Everyone that is interested in any fiber arts is welcome to come. The People on the Bus

Wednesday, August 12, 11:30am-4pm
The Charles Theatre

Meet at Nancy Supik's at 11:30am. Get the MTA app loaded on your phone and learn how to use it (we’ll review last year’s app use ideas and fine tune our skills). We'll walk to the bus stop around noon and take the bus to the Charles Theatre. Bring some cash, $1 each way for the bus (unless you are using the Charm Pass) and $12 (cash or card) for your movie ticket. We will probably arrive home close to 4pm. RSVP to let Nancy & Trish know you’re coming and to help us pick the movie!

10x10x10 Short Play Festival

THE PRETENDERS NEED YOUR INPUT FOR THIS UPCOMING THEATER EVENT

The next WN theater activity will be attending the 10x10x10 Short Play Festival presented by Fells Point Corner Theatre (FPCT). These are ten 10-minute plays by ten local playwrights, performed by an ensemble of ten local performers. Produced intermittently at FPCT since 2014, it is among the most well known and most popular original play festival in our region. The audience votes on their favorite play to win!

We are looking at one of two Sunday matinees: August 16 or 23 at 2:00pm.

We'll be discussing Niall Williams, As it is in Heaven.

Time has already stopped for Stephen Griffin when he moves into the little house by the sea. Twenty-eight years old and haunted by death, the tall, awkward, shy schoolteacher is content to care for his father in Dublin and let life pass him by. Then a miracle appears: a string ensemble from Venice and, with it, a violinist named Gabriella Castoldi. Even though the worldly, beautiful musician seems incapable of giving her heart, love seizes Stephen Griffin ... unbidden and shaking every particle of his spirit. Features Williams's characteristic lyrical writing.

What’s Next Kayaking Expedition

Wednesday, August 19, 8-11am (August 26th will be rain date) 
Canton Kayak Club, 1633 Thames St, Baltimore, MD 21231

No kayaking experience necessary. Bring your own kayak or rent one for $25.00 using a smartphone and QR code at pier. Scott Spencer will lead the flotilla with a discussion of highlights around the Inner Harbor and Fells Point. Wear clothes that can get wet.

New location for August 19 kayak adventure. We will leave from the Canton Kayak Club in Fells Point on the waterfront along the Barcocina Restaurant. Please see RSVP for details.

Future Theater Event

THE PRETENDERS NEED YOUR INPUT FOR THIS UPCOMING THEATER EVENT

Produced in Partnership with the Baltimore August Wilson Celebration, Fells Point Corner Theatre will present August Wilson's Jitney. Tickets for this festival run out quickly and will go on sale August 1. The matinee performances we are considering are Sunday, November 15 or December 6 at 2:00pm. 

​About Jitney: In the Hill District of Pittsburgh in 1970, a group of Black men struggle to make a living as drivers for a makeshift taxi company. Owner Jim Becker’s son, Clarence, returns from prison just as the cab company faces a critical juncture. Deep animosities and long-held grudges come to the surface, jeopardizing the prospects for the drivers, who include alcoholic Fielding, gossipy, comical Turnbo, and earnest, decent Youngblood.

RSVP to Azura, by noon on Friday, July 31 with your interest and your preferred date. We may arrange to purchase a block of tickets for the group, if there's enough interest, or just have everyone purchase tickets on August 1.
