Help out with clean up! See results!

Did you know that Friends of Patterson Park hosts trash pick-ups? (The next one is Saturday, October 10th.) They offer trash grabbers, bags, gloves and coffee. You get the satisfaction of making our park even better. Plus, you find some strange stuff. Some neighborhood organizations offer the same thing; see an example for Highlandtown here.

You can also go to Patterson Park with a neighbor on any day and ask the folks at the White House for a trash bag and grabber.

UkuLaLas!

Tuesdays, 9:45-11:30am
Cedar House in Patterson Park

At 9:45am strum along with the UkuLaLas. Meet on Tuesday mornings at the Cedar House for practice. Uke players, other instruments, singers and supportive audience members are all welcome. And starting at 11am Stroller Strum on the steps of the Observatory.

The UkuLaLas warmly invite all parents and caregivers to a sunny diversion in the park. Bring your little ones to a fun sing along that will be sure to get their toes tapping. Rattles, kazoos and other noise makers are encouraged. Pass the word about this free event in our lovely park.

What’s Next Kayaking Expedition #2

What’s Next second kayak excursion is coming Friday, October 2nd, 9am. Meet at Brown’s Wharf - Canton Kayak Club, Fell’s Point Dock. Self serve kayak rentals are available with a smartphone and credit card ($25). RSVP here. Come paddle with us!

UkuLaLas Fall Saturday Strum at Viv’s

No practice on Saturdays during the fall, but we’ll meet at Viv’s house from 10am to noon for a special strum. Let’s play some fun tunes together! Come at 9:30 for tea and snacks.

Housing as We Age

One decision, or series of decisions, we all need to consider as we age is how our housing needs will change. You may be pondering such questions as: 

• How should I modify my existing house so I can stay in it longer? 

• If I want to have someone come live with me, for either financial or caregiving reasons, what do I need to know?

• Are there co-housing options nearby? And how is that different from sharing my home?

• What other housing options are available?

If you are thinking about any of these questions, please join Nancy Supik and Beth Braun for a discussion on how we, as What’s Next, can work together to answer these questions. The first meeting will be held on Sunday, October 4th, at 2:00 pm at Nancy’s house. We will spend time determining which areas of interest apply to those that attend—and how we can delve deeper into the topics. We expect there will be a series of (at least three) informative gatherings after that first meeting. And, depending on the interests of the group, potentially many more after the first set of meetings.

First Monday Trail Hike - Upper Patapsco

For October’s hike, we will Hike the Ole Ranger Trail while exploring the Hollofield area of Patapsco Valley State Park. The trail is rated as moderate and is 3.9 miles long. There is a $2 fee per car. Please use the evite link below to RSVP and indicate whether you will meet us there or want to carpool from Charmed Kitchen at 9:15am. Let us know if you need a ride or can drive. Hope you can join us!

Fiber Arts Group

The Fiber Arts Group will hold their monthly gathering at Nancy Newman’s house on the second Sunday, as is customary. Everyone that is interested in any fiber arts is welcome to come. Bring the project you are working on—or maybe one where you are stuck. If you are planning to attend, RSVP to let Nancy know and to get the address.

We will be reading The Life Impossible by Matt Haig. Available at the Pratt Library. All are welcome.

Plot summary: When retired math teacher Grace Winters is left a rundown house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan.

Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

The People on the Bus

B&O Railroad Museum

Meet at Nancy Supik's house; load the MTA app to your phone and learn how to use it. We will review last month’s app use ideas and fine tune our skills. We'll walk to the bus stop at 9:45. Bring some cash, $1 each way for the bus (unless you are using the Charm Pass). $10 admission to the museum. Lunch at Hollins Street Market? Probably arrive home close to 2 PM. RSVP to let Nancy & Trish know you’re coming!

Future Pretenders’ Event: Open Mic/Performance Showcase

Start thinking about and selecting your own offering for our 'Open Mic' event in late January or February. This can be anything you would like to share: a joke or story, a favorite poem, a monologue from a play. Or get together with a friend to work up a short duet scene.
