Did you know that Friends of Patterson Park hosts trash pick-ups? They offer trash grabbers, bags, gloves and coffee. You get the satisfaction of making our park even better. Plus, you find some strange stuff. 

You can also go to Patterson Park with a neighbor on any day and ask the folks at the White House for a trash bag and grabber.

UkuLaLas!

The Ukulalas meet on Tuesday mornings at the Cedar House. Uke players, singers and supportive audience members are all welcome. First Monday Trail Hike: Cromwell Valley Park and the Risteau Lime Kiln

There was an interesting article in the Baltimore Banner that inspired this hike: Jim Kelly, a longtime park volunteer, saved Cromwell Valley’s kilns for the history, but the foxes and birds love them, too.

Carpooling can be done at Charmed Kitchen @ 9:15am. Let me know if you need a ride or if you can drive.

NOTE: Due to road work near the closest entrance to the Nature Center, enter at 2000 Cromwell Bridge Road and drive to the parking area nearest the Nature Center.

Fiber Arts Group

The Fiber Arts Group will hold their monthly gathering at Nancy Newman’s house on the second Sunday, as is customary. Everyone who is interested in any fiber arts is welcome to come. Tuesday, November 10, 7-9pm at Susan and Chuck Davis’s Home

We will be reading Graham Greene's classic, The Quiet American (1955). It’s available at the Pratt Library.

Plot summary: The novel is set in Saigon amidst the collapse of French colonialism and the early participation of the United States in the war. Greene indicts American intervention, intervention grounded in a willful innocence and ignorance and a belief in the inherent goodness of its actions. He does so by telling the story of Alden Pyle, a young American, through the eyes of the older and more jaded British journalist Thomas Fowler. The third leading character is a young Vietnamese woman, Phuong. Greene drew upon his experience as a war correspondent to tell his story.

Meet at Nancy Supik's house; load the MTA app to your phone and learn how to use it. We will review last month’s app use ideas and fine tune our skills. We'll walk to the bus stop at 10:45. Bring some cash, $1 each way for the bus (unless you are using the Charm Pass). $8 admission to the museum. Probably arrive home close to 2 PM. RSVP to let Nancy & Trish know you’re coming!

Housing as We Age Follow-up Meeting

A follow-up meeting with reports back from our subcommittees on the questions we asked last time (below). If you weren't able to be at the first meeting, but are interested in helping with one of the subcommittees or topics, you are welcome to join us. This time we’ll meet at the Cedar House in Patterson Park.

One decision, or series of decisions, we all need to consider as we age is how our housing needs will change as we age. You may be pondering such questions as: 

• How should I modify my existing house so I can stay in it longer? 

• If I want to have someone come live with me, for either financial or care-giving reasons, what do I need to know?

• Are there co-housing options nearby? And how is that different from sharing my home?

• What other housing options are available?

What's Next’s UkuLaLas, will be performing several holiday numbers at the annual Patterson Park Observatory Lighting event from 3:45 until 4:15. We will gather at the Observatory at 3:30.

All What's Next members are encouraged to join in—we welcome singers, kazoo players, and percussionists of every persuasion. Please mark your calendars and come add to our numbers as we light up the holiday season with fun and good cheer! Lyrics to sing along.

Future Pretenders’ Event: Open Mic/Performance Showcase

Start thinking about and selecting your own offering for our 'Open Mic' event in late January or February. This can be anything you would like to share: a joke or story, a favorite poem, a monologue from a play. Or get together with a friend to work up a short duet scene.
